New Work from Bernice and Sean

Last Day Saturday, April 20th, 2024

Artists Bernice Strawn (Salida, CO) and Sean O’Meallie (Colorado Springs, CO) bring a fun, imaginative and colorful exhibit to the Regional Gallery.  Strawn’s new work of found object “chair” pieces are animated and whimsical. Strawn states:

 “…To me it is like a playground of pre-made shapes.  CHAIRS, we take them for granted as we feel where we are going to sit, but do we really see the chair?  As it ages and comes apart at its well-made joints, I see other possibilities. I see gates, temple roofs, half circles, arches.  The lathed, tapered legs are enticing. In the process of removing the old finishes, varnishes and paints, I get to scrape down to the original hard wood and caress its form with my hands. The age and density of the wood moderate the water based acrylic paint I use.  I frequently rub in the paint or brush it on opaquely. I like to sand away the paint to highlight the edges so you may see the original wood.

That old chair filled with memories need not be discarded.

Sean O’Meallie is a nationally known and celebrated artist.  His work, usually painted wood, is noted for its visual and tactile allure, and multilayered content;

“In my work I usually draw on intellectual, visual and spatial opportunities presented by circumstance to communicate possibility.  In this, I employ the semiotics of popular culture, human perception and habituation in self-conscious ways.”

Both artists are in the permanent collection of the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center.
