A workshop production is a form of theatrical performance, in which a play or musical is staged in a modest form which does not include some aspects of a full production. For example, costumes, sets and musical accompaniment may be excluded, or may be included in a simpler form. In contrast, tryout productions are usually presented as full productions, with performers in costume, on a set, and accompanied by an orchestra or band. Anyone who signs up to take the workshop will be given a part.

* Participation and attendance for this performance is recommended for ages 14 and up with parent discretion advised; production contains some adult content. Script available upon request. *

About the play:

The first preserved writing in English isn’t even about England. The epic poem Beowulf was written in the sixth century and takes place in Denmark. It is all about the Vikings and their efforts to enjoy life in a mead hall. Mead, of course, was their favorite, and maybe their only, alcoholic beverage. So a mead hall is, as you might imagine, an old time bar. Unfortunately, their bar attracts a cannibalistic monster. And after they get rid of him, his angry mother comes to the bar seeking revenge. When the Danes are beside themselves with fear (and sadness because there is no place to drink) Beowulf comes from Sweden to rescue them. The Golden Geat (for the people in Sweden were called Geats back then) is an attempt to show similarities between that time and place with modern America and some of the political issues we face today. It attempts to do it with humor and without choosing sides by incorporating a lot of fun and music, and a little bit of sarcasm.
