Alice's Wonderland Camp (ages 5-7)

This creative camp is designed with young students in mind. Set to the story of Lewis Carroll's classic, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, we will spend 4 days wandering in Wonderland as we create masks and hold our own caucus race, construct our very own mischievous Cheshire cat and contemptuous Caterpillar that students will animate to music, and even host a "mad" tea party. Ballet classes are included in this camp, and the basis of the classes will be used in the programming we have developed for our adventures in Wonderland. Students must be fully potty trained to register for this camp.

Storyteller Camp (ages 8-12)

Join us for a camp designed to focus on the expressive elements of dance that demonstrate dance as a model for communication. Full-length dance performances usually tell us a story. Many classical ballets are modeled after literature, such as Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet and E.T.A Hoffmann's The Nutcracker and The Mouse King, and are especially rich in the story-telling aspect that is very important in dance.

This camp will combine the aspects of regular dance classes and develop the skills of expression and communication through movement. The class portion will focus on teaching the movements common to dance and how to develop the technique required to execute movements. During our storytelling portion, we will examine movement and its connection to the expression of emotion, character, and plot. Our theme this year is Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, a story rich in possibilities for connecting dance to the story of Alice and has even been adapted into a full-length ballet for The Royal Ballet in 2011. With such memorable characters as the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, and the Queen of Hearts; this camp will delve into the links between emotion, dance, and communicating the plot of a story.

Dance, Dance, Dance (ages 8-12)

This camp is designed for students ages 7-12 who have either never danced before, or have taken the Friday Arts Academy dance classes. Our instructors have developed curriculum that covers the elements of dance and introduces them to techniques and movements that are specific to styles of dance for a truly diverse dance education experience. Styles that can be included are: ballet, jazz, modern, and hip-hop. Classes in these styles are included in the camp, in addition to games and exercises designed to explore the elements of dance in a fun and energetic way.

Ballerina Boot Camp (Level 1, ~ages 7-12)

This summer, we are excited to be offering two Ballerina Boot Camps. Our Level 1 camp is suitable for students already in our level 1 Ballet program or students who have had at least one year of ballet at another studio. If you have never had dance before and are interested in the School of Dance, we recommend attending our Alice's Wonderland camp; Storyteller camp; Dance, Dance, Dance camp; or A Beginner's Guide to Dance depending on your age and preferences. This particular camp is not suitable for beginners.

Ballerina Boot Camp (Level 2-3, determined by director/instructor)

The Level 2-3 Ballerina Boot Camp is open to current School of Dance students who were in level 2-3 as of the end of the spring semester. This boot camp will focus on honing alignment in extensions, turning, timing, and will explore the content of allegro work to prepare students for the upcoming 2018-2019 year. It is also designed to give students further tools for self-reflective and creative practice.

A Beginner's Guide to Dance (ages 13-18)

This camp is designed for students ages 13-18 and is suitable for students currently taking our Teen Ballet and Teen Jazz classes. Students who are new to dance or have some dance experience will receive lessons in a variety of dance styles that are usually offered at the Sangre de Cristo School of Dance. Styles that can be included are ballet, jazz, modern, character, and hip-hop. This camp will be broken down into workshops for various styles to give an overall introduction to dance and includes exercises that will explore the connection between dance and performing. You may even find a new style that you like!

Ballet Levels 4-7 Somatic/Contemporary Intensive

This camp is designed for students in Ballet Levels 4-7 and features former student Rebecca Van Dover, a dancer from Keigwin + Company, as the instructor. This course will begin with an introduction to somatic practices involving body awareness and mindfulness including Laban and Alexander techniques. These techniques will then be incorporated into contemporary classes with the course culminating in a choreographic work at the end of the week.
