Jewelry Making

In this course students will learn basic jewelry making terms, how to use basic tools, and how to design and assemble various pieces of jewelry and accessories. Students will also receive a printed handout with resources to allow them to explore this medium beyond the boundaries of this course.

Paper Crafting

In this class students will learn about different ways paper can be used to create fun and unique projects while making their projects alongside an advanced and seasoned paper artist! Projects include dynamic and embellished cards, boxes, and more! These projects make great gifts or party favors and students will be given copies of project instructions so they can continue making and practicing these projects at home!
Note: This is a combined session course; if seats are full in this session’s registration, you may enroll in the session for ages 6th Grade-8th Grade (these are the same class).

Ceramics: Wheel Works

Students will learn how to create works on the pottery wheel including mugs, bowls, and jars while also learning glazing techniques. Price includes tuition, clay, glazing, firing, and use of studio tools and materials.

How to Draw Fantastic Creatures

Students will learn to create and draw fantasy creatures using basic shapes, shading and textures. Examples include dragons and mythological beasts, witches, elves, wizards, and other human-like creatures.

Bite-Sized Art History

In this class, students will experience a mini lesson containing one or more “fun facts” relating to a topic in art history. The topic and “fun facts” will change each week and will encourage group discussion. Some topics may also include a small art activity to accompany the lesson.
Note: This class is intended for students taking our Intro to Dance course, held from 1:30pm-2:30pm who will also be enrolled in classes before and/or after Intro to Dance. This class serves as an activity between paid-course blocks. This is a combined session course; if seats are full in this session’s registration, you may enroll in the session for ages 6th Grade-8th Grade (these are the same class).

2D Art

In this course students will learn the elements of art (line, tone, color, texture, shape, space, form and pattern), and how to apply this knowledge to compose and complete assigned projects. Students will also receive a printed handout with resources to allow them to explore the elements of art beyond the boundaries of this course.

Tabletop Pottery

Class Time: 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Throughout this class students will learn the elements and principles of art while creating their three projects. The projects will focus on one technique each: pinch pots, coils, and slabs. These projects are designed to be fun yet functional. Students will be encouraged to use their imagination and what they have learned about the elements and principles of art to make each project their own. Students will also learn about the elements of art such as the visual components of color, form, line, shape, space, texture, and value and the principles of art such as balance, emphasis, movement, proportion, rhythm, unity, and variety. The elements and principles of art are the means an artist uses to organize elements within a work of art. Examples of projects include Creative Pinch Pots, Coil Bowls or Bottles, Slab Wall Hanging or Slab Drape Mold.

Let's Sketch

In this class students will have an opportunity to draw, color, and create works of their choosing in their sketchbooks. Students are welcome to bring a sketchbook from home, or the instructor will provide them one at the beginning of the semester/during a student’s first sketchbook course. There will be a limit of 1 free sketchbook per student, per semester for this course.
Note: This class is intended for students taking our Tabletop Pottery class, held from 2:00pm-3:30pm who will also be enrolled in classes in our 4:00pm-5:00pm time block. This class serves as an activity between paid-course blocks. This is a combined session course; available seats may be filled by students in the 6th Grade-8th grade group as needed for scheduling. (This is the same class).

Watercolor

This course introduces students to various watercolor techniques such as layering, masking, washes, and color usage. They will also become familiar with the 5 Elements of Art, which will be included when painting their very own framed art piece to be proud of.

Artist Trading Cards

In this class, students will learn about the tradition and community around Artist Trading Cards and create their own Artist Trading Cards using their choice of mediums.

Parents/guardians are required to sign-in and sign-out students. Students will only be released to adults indicated in their registration. For unforeseen/last minute pick-up changes, please call 719-295-7200. Drop off and pick up are located at the Kid Rock Café (the east entrance of the Buell Children’s Museum – first level).
Students may be dropped off no more than 15 minutes before class and no later than 15 minutes after their last class. If a student has classes both before and after the noon hour, the student may eat a packed lunch from home on campus. No food will be provided by the Arts Center. A staff member will chaperone the lunch hour from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.
